Correct Leadership Example

GARY: One more thing: set the correct leadership example. I’ve been in this industry for nearly 35 years, and I’ve watched the trends come and go. I’ve watched hundreds of companies come and go. I’ve watched companies start up and just boom for four, five, or six years and then collapse and go bankrupt; and then two weeks later, they’re across the street with a different name, a different shingle, in a rented building.

This is why when I started, you didn’t see a fancy building, you didn’t see a fancy sign. You certainly didn’t see fancy labels and fancy materials, because I didn’t build that way. I started below the frost level. I cleared the ground, I started planting plants, because I knew the future that would sustain Young Living forever would be the farms.

What we have today is something that no one else will ever be able to match. We have our farms, our distilleries, and our analytical laboratories. We know what we have, and it doesn’t matter what some people say other essential oil companies have. You must know—Young Living does not have any competitors. There are no competitors. What’s out there are companies that want to jump on the bandwagon—but they are not competitors. Competition is like two football teams playing on the same field. That’s competition.

Anyone who would compete with Young Living, would have to have farms, but then they would first have to have 30 years of experience. They would have to have laboratories and analytical chemists. They would have to know how to formulate and create new products. They would have to be able to write about research, scientific findings, and anything relating to the activities of Young Living. They would have to have a background and experience in natural medicine. There is nobody who can compete with Young Living in any of those areas.

Another way they can’t compete is that they don’t have YOU. We do! We’re family, and we are the best in the world!

Average People Can Make Better-Than-Average Incomes!

MARY: There’s another facet to studying, Gary, and that’s helping people to understand that the business we have is probably one of the last real, honest ways that the average person can make a better-than-average income.

I consider myself to be an average person, and I was thrilled when I received my first substantial check. When it went beyond that, I was in a state of shock. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me.

When you talk about freedom, people get so excited. We’ve heard that time and time again from the people who’ve come up on stage. It’s a thrill to know you can go and do what you want to do, when you want to do it, and how you want to do it.

So I know how you feel when you are the one who helped create that kind of excitement, enthusiasm, and motivation for someone else, when they want what you want. If they don’t want what you want, next! You don’t have time to get the horse to water and try to get it to drink, too. If that horse doesn’t want water, go find a horse that does.

So many people are out there waiting for you to talk to them, to bless their lives in ways beyond what most of them can’t even imagine. You are the messengers; and if you don’t talk and you don’t get it out there, how many people are denied the opportunity? Gary has so much knowledge, but his knowledge is of no value to other people if you don’t spread the message. You are probably the most important factor in Young Living, because you take that knowledge to the world.

You Need to Have Passion!

GARY: All you have to do is have passion and a deep, burning desire inside.

When I was sitting in the wheelchair, after trying to commit suicide the third time, and I finally decided that I wanted to live, I had to find a deep, burning desire inside to live. Sometimes things happen that cause us to have to look inside to find that deep, burning desire. That deep, burning desire starts as just one tiny flame; and after 26 months in the wheelchair, my toe moved against the blanket, kindling a deep, burning fire. Yes, it took 13 years for me to learn to walk again, but I never stopped for even one minute. If you want to be successful, don’t stop for even one minute.

It’s important that people know you care about them. When people know you care, you don’t have to sell them anything. Always hold the principles that God has given to us close to your heart, and always live to be an example to those around you and to the world in which you live. That’s what Young Living is all about.

Know your business. Take time to study it. If you’re going to invest in a Napa Auto Parts franchise, would you just walk into their office and say, “I want to buy a franchise” and write out a check? Nobody would do that. You would sit down with the chief accountant and study their books. Then you’d sit down with a branch manager and study the entire operation. You’d spend at least a year studying that franchise before you ever invested.

Young Living is not complicated; Young Living is simple. Mary, how long would it take them to learn the compensation plan?

MARY: Five to ten minutes to become familiar with it.

GARY: Then you need to spend some time every day studying it; and if you don’t understand it, get with somebody who does and have them teach you. Study the comp plan and learn your business, so you can articulate it. It’s simple—know your business!

Just Open Your Mouth!

GARY: My point on communication is that all you have to do is open your mouth. I was on an airplane not too long ago, and the stewardess came up to me and said, “Mr. Young, the lady two rows behind you is very offended with your cologne.” I had on Highest Potential.

The stewardess explained, “It’s really making her nauseated, and she wants to know if you would go in the bathroom and wash it off.”

I looked at her and said, “No, I won’t, because I don’t wear cologne, I wear essential oils.” Then I said, “This is my issue. I wasn’t going to say anything. But I’m blowing my nose because my nose is running.”

The stewardess said, “I’m sorry, is there something wrong?”

I said, “Yes, the lady two seats behind me is wearing synthetic perfume, and I’m allergic to it. So I’ll tell you what, if you want to go back and tell that lady if she’ll go in the bathroom and wash off her synthetic perfume, I’ll put on another oil.”

Well, guess who became a distributor? The stewardess!

You know, you’re standing in the grocery store line. It’s so simple. Just take Peppermint out of your purse or pocket . . . ahhh! Everybody in the store will smell it. You don’t even have to talk to share Young Living.

Share the Oils with Understanding

GARY: When you’re building your business, it’s like birthing a child. How many of you know how many hours it takes from the time a child is born until it takes its first step? How many hours are there of trying and trying and pulling itself up and falling down? How many hours does it take a child before it takes its first step, average? It’s about 10,000 hours to that first step.

A lot of people are children in the dynamics of their brain in accepting new concepts. So sometimes we have to hold onto them, help them take a step, and keep them from falling. If we receive the gift of the oils, it’s our responsibility to share them in humility and understanding so that our families and friends can embrace them. There will be those who will not, and that’s okay. But we need to be the first to show them the vision, teach them, and give them the time they need. Don’t get upset, but be kind and thoughtful in all situations.

How do we build the right business structure? Communication is number one, and that’s just what I was talking about; communicate with your family, communicate with your friends. This is not something that is hard to sell.

When I get on an airplane, I try to isolate myself now because if I say one word, I don’t get any work done. Whether it’s a trip from here to Nepal or Japan or Australia, I use the plane time as writing time and creativity. I have created so many blends in the air because when I get above that layer of pollution in a plane at 40,000 feet, I go from the AM station to the FM station, and the communication with my Creator is just better! So I use that time to communicate and create, and you can, too.
